The Challenges for men today……
Being a bloke in the world today is perhaps not as easy as it once was. Often in the newspapers and on television we read of the challenges that young men face at school and, in adulthood, the challenges continue. We live in a sophisticated society today and there are enormous pressures on all of us - men and women - to conform, to achieve and to act and live in ways that are respectful of our neighbours and our environment.
The Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross is an organisation that was born out of the discrimination that Catholic men in Australia once faced in obtaining employment and promotion. Thanks to the efforts of our forebears in the Knights, we don’t often hear of discrimination against men on the grounds of their religion as we once did.
The challenges we all face today though are no less than the challenges our fathers and grandfathers faced. They may be totally different in nature to the ones they faced but the fact is we still all face challenges in our lives.
The Knights of the Southern Cross is an organisation that exists to help all of us develop a rounded outlook over the four dimensions of our lives - the intelligence, the emotions, the physical and the spiritual. We achieve this by reaching out to help other members of our community. By helping others we develop the four dimensions of our own lives.
You are invited to consider joining the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross, or help establish a branch of the Knights in your local community. The Knights are engaged in a number of significant projects at State level which provide assistance and scholarships to young people and Catholic teachers. Nationally, they established Southern Cross Care one of the largest Aged Care facilities in Australia. At the local level you are invited to exhibit leadership and become involved in projects that assist your local community. The Knights provide training and personal formation programs that enable you to become a better leader and a more rounded person. |

A message from the Bishops…..
In a letter from five Catholic Bishops in The West Australian 22 December 1999 to 475,000 Catholics in Western Australia, we wrote: “Ultimately, the Catholic person views all of their lifespan as a journey towards full reunion with God after death …… The quest of the human person through life is to discover the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual pathways of repentance, conversion and forgiveness by which our soul is launched at the end of our lives into an ongoing, eternal communion with the Creator from and by whom we were first made.“
The work of the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross is a powerful means by which men can better live out this quest we all share in.
The challenges we face as individuals today are different, but no smaller, than the challenges of the people who went before us and forged the Australian nation.
The Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross played an important part in helping make Australia the tolerant nation we are today. They played a crucial role in building a Christian nation.
We invite you to continue this work by joining the Knights. The Bishops of Australia continue to be indebted to the Knights for the many contributions they make to the health of the Church in Australia. It has been the voluntary effort of many who have built a Church and nation of which we can all be justly and quietly proud.
